Mackerel fillets in sunflower oil. Perfect with salad, great on toast. The easy-peel lid means no mess so is perfect for when you need nourishment but are short on time.

Mackerel is becoming recognised as a nutritional ‘superfish’ due to it’s high content of key nutrients – Omega 3, Vitamin D , Vitamin B12 – as well as being high in Protein.

With its excellent taste and health benefits it is highly valued for its rich oil content and succulent texture.

Despite its fishy smell, Mackerel has excellent taste. Some may say it tastes like tuna or salmon, which is true to some extent. It has sticky yet firm flesh and is pretty tender when prepared on a hot grill. Unlike other fish types, it has a sweet taste and is not salty, with a smaller number of bones.

Measuring only 60cm in length and travelling in huge shoals, mackerel has to be caught via net as opposed to the traditional pole and line. John West mackerel is typically fished for around the North Atlantic.

After being hauled on board and refrigerated in chilled tanks, it’s then transported to the local distribution centre, where it becomes the delicious canned mackerel that you find on your supermarket shelves.

John West brought the great taste of Pacific Salmon to the UK in 1857 , and since then, they have made a name for thmselves when it comes to fish. Today, they sell everything from Easy Peel Mackerel to No Drain Tuna in fridge friendly pots, but ensure to remember our rich and unique heritage.

None of this would be possible were it not for one man and his big ideas. John West was born in Linlithgow, Scotland. A younger son, not entitled to an inheritance, so had to make his own wealth. As it turns out, this bad luck was to be our good fortune.

Like many young men of his time, John sets out for the Americas to make his fortune. He landed in Canada and married his wife, Mary, before training as a millwright. By 1848, the Californian gold rush is in full-fever. John responds to its call.

John’s hunt for gold was unfruitful, but like any great entrepreneur, he didnt give up. The US government offers free land in Oregon for lumberjacks, and by 1851, John’s secured 640 acres. He clears mighty redwoods with just a saw and axe. In their place, he erects his own sawmills

Despite two sawmills to run and a family of eight to look after, John opts for a new challenge. He sets up a salmon salterie, packing salted, wild salmon into wooden barrels. They’re shipped as far as England, and the John West name becomes synonymous with quality fish.
